General Information

The capital of the Republic of Hungary, Budapest is situated on the Danube River. With its over two million inhabitants, the city has one-fifth of the country's total population. Budapest has two major parts on the two banks of the Danube: hilly Buda and Óbuda on the west and flat Pest on the east bank. Due to its central location, from Budapest you can easily reach other major cities such as Zagreb, Vienna, Belgrad, Prague and Bucharest by train and there are numerous connections by road to neighbouring countries, not to mention the passenger airport of the capital, Ferihegy with its two terminals.

Main Tourist Attractions

Budapest's main tourist attractions can be found on Castle Hill in Buda and central part of Pest (Parliament, Chain Bridge, Heroes' Square). The Vár (Castle), is the most prominent feature of Buda, one of the symbols of Budapest. Full of bastions, mansions, and the huge palace, the Castle District preserves many medieval memories of the city.

Other Places to Visit

The city centre of Pest offers numerous sights, such as the State Opera House, Váci Street and the St. Stephen's Basilica, all within walking distance of each other. If you wish to relax or do some sports, Margaret Island is definitely the right place to choose. While in the city, a visitor also has to try the massage and healing waters of the renowned thermal spas (Gellért, Széchenyi, Rudas Baths).

Leisure Activities, Museums, Events

If you are interested in modern history it is also worth visiting the House of Terror on Andrássy avenue and the Statue Park in the suburbs. Being the centre of the country, in Budapest, classic and modern exhibitions are open all year round (Museum of Fine Arts, art Gallery, National Museum, Ludvig Museum). The city offers various folklore and gastronomic adventures, so you can learn Hungarian folk dances and taste delicious meals of the world famous Hungarian cuisine. Budapest is also famous for parties and events for music-fans - among these Europe's biggest summer festival, the Sziget Festival is the most important one.
